Ten Pieces

“I absolutely loved the Ten Pieces DVD!  At first I didn’t like classical music.  Now I do.  It was amazing!!!!!!”

“It changed my opinion of classical music.”

“I thought Ten Pieces was brilliant.  The music takes you away.”

“It’s calming and relaxing.  It’s fabulous.”

What on earth have the children been doing to make them respond in this way?

Well... last term all the children in Key Stage Two were treated to a ‘cinema’ performance (in the school hall!) of the BBC DVD ‘Ten Pieces’.  As they watched, they were introduced to ten pieces of classical music by means of a mix of live action and animation.  The film took them on ‘a journey of wonder’ through a wide range of pieces.  A few weeks later, back in class, they were then asked to watch the DVD again and use musical language to make notes about each piece.  Here are some of the responses:

“That made me feel like I’m on a roller coaster because the tempo was really fast.”  Yulia,  Blake Class

“The music’s timbre makes my tummy feel orange and red because it is a bit scary.  Also it’s a bit evil.” Brenalyn, Dahl Class

“It’s fast and slow.  It sounds like going up and down, trying to get somewhere.” Louis, Hughes Class

“I think the music is very bold and a darkish timbre because it makes you feel alive.  It is also very loud in its dynamics.” Lucy, Rosen Class

“At the start the music builds up suspense, then gets really quick as if something’s happening or chasing you.  The dynamics were very loud since they wanted to build suspense.”  Alex, Shakespeare class

If you want to know which pieces they are talking about, click here to listen to the pieces for yourself and see if you can work it out!

Finally they were asked to vote for their favourite by giving each piece a score.  The overall results and class winners are below:
