ELLINGHAM SCHOOL NEWS

Welcome Back

A VERY, VERY Warm Welcome to Ellingham Children

The children kept smiling through the incredible  heat this week.  They were delighted to be in school and we were delighted to have them back. They are understanding the new morning and day-time routines and we think they'll be experts by next week.

In Celebration assembly today, we celebrated how amazing they have been.  They came up with some fantastic ideas about what had made them happy so far: friends, new teachers, playtimes, exciting books, maths challenges for starters.

We're looking forward to an Autumn term packed with exciting opportunities for learning.

Keeping Cool in School

While it has been super hot this week, we have been taking measures to cool the children down.  They are drinking plenty of water and we are encouraging them to sit in the shade.  During PE, they break out into the air-conditioned library for cool-downs and at lunchtime we cooled all the children down under the hose.

Fun and sensible!

Shade Made for Cool Reading

The gazebos have been put up and have provided the perfect place to snuggle down for some cool reading.   We have a timetable now for every year group to visit the library at lunch time during the week.

Reading for Pleasure is a huge focus for us this year.  All staff had training on this as part of our INSET and we are very excited to support our children to get lost in the world of books.

We hope to share this with you on our Curriculum Insight day on Wednesday 27th September. Save the date and times - 9am and 5.30pm.  We'll have more events through the year so that you can understand better how to support your children achieve their absolute potential (and have fun doing it).

School Meals are Free in 2023/24

All children in primary schools can have a free school meal from September funded by the Mayor of London. You will need to book a healthy hot lunch a week in advance via the Arbor App.

Due to the nature of this new offer, parents need to select a choice from the menu in order for us to work with the caterers to manage waste and logistics.

If you are sending in a lunch, please ensure that snacks and lunchboxes are healthy.  Snacks should be a piece of fruit or vegetable, not a cereal or fruit bar. Lunch boxes should not include sweets and nuts.

Explorers Bookings

If you need before or after school care, Explorers is open to look after your child .  Please do book in advance, even for ad hoc, so that we can cater for them effectively.

School Streets In Action

The School Streets cameras have been set up to view the turn into Harrow Close and into Ellingham Road from Burtons Road.  This means that access from these points is out of action for cars between 8.15am - 9.15am and 2.30pm - 3.30pm.

The council are introducing a School Street scheme, which aims to increase sustainable travel to and from schools, reduce poor parking and improve air quality in the school neighbourhood.

If you usually drive to the school to drop off or pick up, you will need to park on alternative streets and walk to the school entrances or use another form of transport.  If you have relatives or friends who help with your children, please make sure you share this information with them.

If you have a blue disabled badge, please contact the school and we can apply for an exemption for your vehicle so that you can park in the Harrow Close car park.

If you have any comments regarding the scheme, please contact the council directly via the Council's LetsTalk page at kingstonletstalk.co.uk/school-street-ss11 (Harrow Close and Chessington Hall Gardens) and kingstonletstalk.co.uk/school-street-ss12 (Ellingham Road).
